Search Engine Myths and SPAM Revisited

Many webmasters have no clue as to how their sites are doing in the search engines. Nor do they know how to improve their rankings. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is not something to be taken lightly. It’s not rocket science, but you can really mess up your rankings while you figure out how SEO works? So what is a webmaster to do? Especially a church webmaster who doesn’t have any budget to pay someone else to do it for you.

The simple answer is read articles from the experts and pick up what you can. Ok that sounds good, but where are the experts and how do I figure out which expert to believe? That’s a much tougher thing to figure out. But since you are reading my article, here’s my suggestion. The folks at MediumBlue know what they are talking about. Their current article is about Search Engine Myths and they have a good selection of other articles archived. Check them out at http://www.mediumblue.com/newsletters/search-engine-myths.html.

In Issue 19 I talked about avoid SPAM by hiding your email on web pages. Here’s another article on that same topic. I know, that’s just what you need another expert to listen to – but this expert is REALLY an expert. Plus they basically agreed with what I said and they give some more detail. Check out their study and article at http://www.cdt.org/speech/spam/030319spamreport.shtml. Be sure to check out their tool at the bottom of the page on encoding your email addresses. Very useful!
